Although some biological, or physical traits can be tested, they\u2019re not normally used to make a diagnosis. <sup>1<\/sup><br>When a medical professional is talking to you or a loved one about a possible schizophrenia diagnosis, they will follow the same routine steps.  <br>Diagnostic tests for schizophrenia will try to assess the impact the three forms of symptoms have on a person with schizophrenia.<sup>2 <\/sup>Tests to determine a diagnosis and exclude other disorders may include:<sup>3<\/sup> <\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-list-rea-list-block rea-list-block front\"><div class=\"rea-list-block__wrapper\"><div class=\"list-unordered list\"><p>A physical exam to rule out other potential cause of symptoms<\/p><p>Tests to rule out potential differential diagnoses and screenings for use of alcohol and drugs<\/p><p>A psychiatric evaluation to check mental status<\/p><p>Evaluating diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-paragraph-rea-paragraph-block rea-paragraph-block front\"><div class=\"rea-paragraph-block__content\"><p class=\"content-text\">An internationally renowned manual for mental disorders (called DSM-5)<sup>4<\/sup> includes the most up-to-date criteria to identify schizophrenia, and a doctor will use this to aid diagnosis.<br>This tool illustrates a large number of symptoms and traits which are common in schizophrenia. However, a person living with schizophrenia will not display each and every symptom described in the DSM-5.<br>Each individual will have a unique combination of symptoms and experiences.<sup>5<\/sup><br><br>Potential differential diagnoses include bipolar affective disorder, brain tumours, Wilson disease, hyperthyroidism and infectious illnesses like Influenza, Lyme disease and HIV which may result in changes to a person\u2019s mental state.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-separator-rea-separator-block rea-separator-block front\"><div class=\"rea-separator-block__content\"><hr class=\"rea-separator-block__separator\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-title-rea-title-block rea-title-block front\"><div class=\"rea-title-block__content\"><h3 id=\"strongcourse-of-diseasestrong\" class=\"content-title \"><strong>Course of disease<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"content-subtitle rea-hidden\"><\/h4><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-paragraph-rea-paragraph-block rea-paragraph-block front\"><div class=\"rea-paragraph-block__content\"><p class=\"content-text\">It\u2019s also important to note that schizophrenia doesn\u2019t follow a linear course.  <br>Because  the disorder can be so varied, depending on the individual, it\u2019s  normally better described by looking at three phases of schizophrenia  that will occur throughout a lifetime: prodromal, acute and stable.<sup>7,8<\/sup><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-cta-rea-cta-block rea-cta-block front cta-left\"><div class=\"rea-cta-block__content\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0\"><h4 class=\"cta-title\"><\/h4><p class=\"cta-text\"><\/p><a class=\"button__primary button-text\" href=\"\/public\/understanding-schizophrenia\/clinical-course-of-disease\">Find out more about the course of the disease<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-title-rea-title-block rea-title-block front\"><div class=\"rea-title-block__content\"><h3 id=\"\" class=\"content-title rea-hidden\"><\/h3><h4 class=\"content-subtitle \"><strong>Types of symptoms<\/strong><\/h4><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-paragraph-rea-paragraph-block rea-paragraph-block front\"><div class=\"rea-paragraph-block__content\"><p class=\"content-text\">In order to receive an official diagnosis for schizophrenia, the DSM-5 guidelines recommend presence of two or more symptoms for at least one month.<sup>4<\/sup> The most common symptoms, called <em>positive symptoms<\/em>, are delusions, hallucinations, movement disorders and disorganised speech or behaviour.<sup>4<\/sup> Another important category of symptoms are <em>negative symptoms<\/em>, which can be, for instance, a lack of emotions or reduced conversation.<sup>4<\/sup> There can also be cognitive symptoms, which can be issues with making informed decisions and choices and thinking in an organised way.<sup>9<\/sup><br>  <br>Both positive and negative symptoms can appear throughout any phase of the disorder: before, during and after psychotic episodes.  <\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rea-references-rea-references-block rea-references-block front\"><div class=\"rea-references-block__references\"><p class=\"references-title\">References<\/p><ol class=\"references-list\"><li>Messinger JW.
